First Impressions of the Maserati Spyder for 2003

Maserati Spyder

As time has gone by several things can be said about the Maserati Spyder series: including the strong reaction most buyers have towards their car. The 8-cylinder engine is at the core of the strong emotions, it is reliable for its class and delivers a huge amount of torque.

Engine Performance

The Spyder Cambiocorsa is equipped with a Maserati/Ferrari 4.2 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 32 valves. The engine is mated to a Ferrari 6-speed Transaxle. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Maserati.

The Spyder uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Spyder Cambiocorsa Statistics

The dimensions of the Spyder Cambiocorsa are 71.70 inches wide by 169.40 inches long. It sits a comfortable 51.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard two passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 96.10 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $89,622 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-high price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2003 Spyder is a Bosch Motronic design, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel flow is regulated by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The storage capacity of the fuel tank is 23.00 gallons.

The Spyder Cambiocorsa received a miles-per-gallon rating of eleven in-city driving and seventeen when it came to long-distance. Being a gas-powered non-green car, this was subpar.

In Summary

The 2003 model year was unsuccessful for the Maserati Spyder. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the Cambiocorsa version) meant that buyers had several options to choose from..

Good article. At first I felt like I needed to refute your review of the Maserati Spyder, but after further reflection I can see your point of view. Perhaps my personal Spyder Cambiocorsa is an abberation. What is everyone else’s experiences?
