First Impressions of the Maserati Spyder for 2005

Maserati Spyder

The 2005 Maserati Spyder GT was introduced to compete in the convertible market. The GT is a member of a series of two trim levels for the Spyder which include Cambiocorsa and GT. The two-door car with its rear-wheel drive is positioned to aggressively fill this niche for Maserati. There is strong competition from vehicles from Infiniti.

Maserati Spyder Engine Specs

The Spyder GT is equipped with a Maserati/Ferrari 4.2 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 32 valves. The engine is mated to a Ferrari 6-speed Transaxle. This is a long-standing favorite for buyers in the Convertible arena.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The Spyder has power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The car uses coil front springs and coil in the rear.

Vehicle Statistics

The dimensions of the Spyder GT are 71.70 inches wide by 178.10 inches long. It sits a comfortable 51.40 inches off the ground. It seats a standard four passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 104.70 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $86,877 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-low price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Convertible.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2005 Spyder is a traditional Bosch ME-7.3.2, running on gasoline fuel. The fuel is controlled by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The capacity of the fuel tank is 23.30 gallons.

The 2005 Spyder gets 17 miles/gallon on the highway and only 11 in the city. This is exceptional for a convertible car.

We Think...

There are several reasons why the Maserati Spyder GT sold well in 2005. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Maserati, specifically a Spyder.
