A high point in the coupe market is the Lamborghini Gallardo. In 2006 Lamborghini rolled out an upgraded version of the Gallardo with three versions: Base, SE, and Spyder. Sales for the Gallardo, especially the Gallardo Base, were brisk during 2006 and 2007. The improved reliability and the updated styling were responsible for the increased interest.

The restyled Gallardo Base is equipped with a 5.0-liter ten-cylinder engine that utilizes 40 valves. The engine is mated to a Lamborghini six-speed transaxle. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2005 version.

The Gallardo uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

The fuel system for the 2006 Gallardo is a Lamborghini LIE system, running on gasoline . The fuel is regulated by an electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design.

The 2006 Gallardo gets 15 - 17 miles/gallon on the highway and only 9 - 10 in the city. This is below average for a coupe car.

In 2005 and 2006 the Gallardo Base was availble in the exterior colors of Arancio Borealis Orange, Arancio Ymir Orange, Bianco Cygnus White, Blu Caelum Dark Blue, Custom Exterior Color, Exterior Paint Color From Murcielago Range, Giallo Halys Yellow, Giallo Midas Yellow, Grigio Altair Light Grey, Nero Noctis Black, Nero Osyris Black, and Rosso Metis Dark Red. Additional options were available as special orders from the factory.

There are several reasons why the Lamborghini Gallardo Base sold well in 2006. Mainly the increase in availability and a marked improvement in quality meant the buying public was more apt to choose a Lamborghini, specifically a Gallardo.
